Lignite Price in Ireland (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average lignite import price amounted to $272 per ton, shrinking by -2.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 450% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,956 per ton. From June 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($306 per ton), while the price for the United States ($259 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Lignite Price in Ireland (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average lignite export price amounted to $195 per ton, reducing by -26.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $304 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the UK.
From 2014 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the UK amounted to -2.5% per year.
Lignite Imports in Ireland
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of lignites decreased by -49.5% to 15K tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 29K tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, lignite imports shrank notably to $3.6M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $5.2M, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Lignite Exports in Ireland
Lignite exports from Ireland shrank to 434 tons in 2022, declining by -11.4% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase.
