Lentil Price in Saudi Arabia (CIF) - 2022
The average lentil import price stood at $894 per ton in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, lentil import price increased by +53.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,052 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($912 per ton), while the price for Australia amounted to $402 per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Lentil Price in Saudi Arabia (FOB) - 2022
The average lentil export price stood at $1,182 per ton in 2022, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 153%. The export price peaked at $1,248 per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($1,398 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($841 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nepal (+98.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lentil Imports in Saudi Arabia
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of lentils, when their volume decreased by -11.7% to 53K tons. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 5.5%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 60K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, lentil imports expanded rapidly to $48M in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +19.7% over the period from 2019 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
