Large Scale Manufacture of Ammonia

This involves reacting methane (CH4) in the presence of steam (H2O) at high temperatures and pressure over a catalyst. The products of this reaction are hydrogen gas (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO). The hydrogen gas is then isolated and stored for use in the next step.

The second step in the process is to react the hydrogen gas with nitrogen gas (N2) to create ammonia (NH3). This reaction is called the Haber process, and it takes place in a reactor vessel under high pressure. A catalyst, typically iron, is used to speed up the reaction. The raw materials are typically first purified to ensure there are no impurities that could affect the reaction or the end product. Heat is also applied to the reaction vessel to increase the rate of the reaction.

Once the ammonia has been produced, it is separated from the unreacted hydrogen and nitrogen gas. This is usually done through a process called liquefaction, in which the gases are cooled and compressed until they become liquid. Because ammonia has a lower boiling point than nitrogen or hydrogen, it can be separated from the other gases through a process called fractional distillation. This involves cooling the liquid mixture to a very low temperature and allowing the ammonia to evaporate, leaving behind the nitrogen and hydrogen.

The final step in the process is to purify the ammonia and package it for use. The ammonia is typically purified through a series of distillation steps to remove any impurities. The purified ammonia is then typically stored and transported under pressure in large tanks or cylinders.

The large scale manufacture of ammonia requires a significant amount of energy, as the steam reforming process used to generate hydrogen is energy intensive. To reduce the environmental impact of ammonia production, some manufacturers are exploring alternative sources of hydrogen, such as renewable sources like wind or solar power, or by capturing waste heat from other industrial processes.
