Lard Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023

The average lard export price stood at $1,021 per ton in September 2023, approximately mirroring the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 an increase of 2.4% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,074 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($1,103 per ton) and Mexico ($912 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($849 per ton) and Australia ($849 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average lard import price amounted to $1,978 per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +3.2% per year.

Lard Exports in Canada

In 2022, approx. 17K tons of lard were exported from Canada; growing by 39% compared with the year before. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Lard Imports in Canada

For the third consecutive year, Canada recorded decline in supplies from abroad of lard, which decreased by -33.2% to 107 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp shrinkage. The smallest decline of -21.7% was in 2021.

In value terms, lard imports shrank rapidly to $211K in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $263K, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
