Iron and Steel Price in Switzerland (CIF) - 2023
The average iron and steel import price stood at $714 per ton in September 2023, waning by -1.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $966 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($746 per ton) and Ukraine ($711 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($688 per ton) and Germany ($702 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Iron and Steel Price in Switzerland (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average iron and steel export price amounted to $581 per ton, dropping by -80.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $30,831 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($32,363 per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($28,757 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Iron and Steel Imports in Switzerland
In 2022, imports of iron and steel into Switzerland shrank significantly to 10K tons, which is down by -16.3% against the year before. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 308% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 12K tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, iron and steel imports amounted to $9.1M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

For the fourth consecutive year, Switzerland recorded growth in shipments abroad of iron and steel, which increased by 418% to 281 tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, iron and steel exports reached $163K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a dramatic decrease.
