In oil refining, oil is processed and transformed into various useful products through a series of physical and chemical processes. The main objective of oil refining is to separate crude oil into its different components and remove impurities to obtain high-quality products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, lubricants, and other valuable chemicals.

The process of oil refining begins with the separation of crude oil into its different fractions based on their boiling points in a process called distillation. Crude oil is heated in a distillation column, and as the temperature increases, different fractions vaporize and rise to different heights in the column. The lighter fractions with lower boiling points, such as natural gas, gasoline, and kerosene, rise to the top of the column, while the heavier fractions, such as diesel and lubricating oils, remain at the bottom.

Once the crude oil is separated into fractions, further refining processes are employed to modify their composition and properties. These processes include cracking, reforming, isomerization, and alkylation. Cracking is used to break down large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller ones, which improves the yield of gasoline and other lighter products. Reforming involves rearranging the molecular structure of hydrocarbons to enhance their octane rating and improve the quality of gasoline.

Isomerization converts straight-chain hydrocarbons into branched-chain isomers, which improves the octane rating of gasoline. Alkylation combines low molecular weight alkenes, such as propylene and butylene, with isobutane to produce high-octane gasoline components. These processes help optimize the composition of the refined products to meet specific performance and environmental requirements.

In addition to the above processes, oil refining also involves several other critical steps such as hydrotreating, desulfurization, and catalytic reforming. Hydrotreating removes impurities from the fractions by subjecting them to high temperatures and pressure in the presence of a catalyst. This process helps to remove sulfur, nitrogen, and other contaminants that can have harmful effects on the environment and affect the performance of engines and industrial equipment.

Desulfurization is specifically aimed at reducing the sulfur content in petroleum products to comply with environmental regulations. Catalytic reforming uses a catalyst to transform naphtha, a fraction derived from crude oil, into high-octane gasoline blending components and other valuable chemicals.

After undergoing these refining processes, the various fractions are further treated to achieve the desired product specifications. This may involve additional processes like solvent extraction, dewaxing, and polymerization. Finally, the refined products are subjected to quality control measures to ensure they meet the required standards before being distributed to the market for consumption.
