View PricingFructose Consumption
Fructose consumption refers to the intake of fructose, a natural sugar found in various fruits, vegetables, and sweeteners. It is one of the main components of table sugar (sucrose) and high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which are commonly added to processed foods and beverages.
Fructose is metabolized differently in the body compared to other sugars like glucose. When consumed in moderate amounts from whole foods like fruits, it is generally well-tolerated and has minimal negative effects on health. However, excessive fructose consumption, especially from added sugars, can have several consequences.
Impact on metabolism
Excessive fructose consumption can contribute to insulin resistance, a condition where cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin. This can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Additionally, fructose is primarily metabolized by the liver, and consuming large amounts can result in increased fat production, leading to fatty liver disease.
Weight gain and obesity
High fructose intake has been associated with weight gain and obesity. Fructose does not effectively suppress appetite compared to glucose and may even increase hunger and food cravings, leading to excess calorie consumption. Moreover, excessive fructose consumption can promote the accumulation of visceral fat, which is stored around the abdominal organs and associated with metabolic disorders.
Cardiovascular health
Studies have shown that excessive fructose consumption can contribute to several risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It can raise blood pressure, increase triglyceride levels, and promote the formation of small, dense LDL cholesterol particles – all of which are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
NAFLD is a condition characterized by an accumulation of fat in the liver. Excessive fructose consumption, particularly in the form of added sugars, is a known contributor to NAFLD. The liver metabolizes fructose into fat, and when consumption is high, it can overwhelm the organ's capacity, leading to fat buildup and liver damage.
Dental health
Fructose can have negative effects on dental health. When consumed in excess, it contributes to tooth decay by providing a food source for harmful bacteria in the mouth. Additionally, fructose-containing sweeteners like HFCS are often found in sugary beverages, which can further increase the risk of tooth decay.
In conclusion, moderate fructose consumption from whole foods is generally not a concern for most individuals. However, excessive intake of fructose, especially from added sugars, can have detrimental effects on metabolism, weight, cardiovascular health, liver health, and dental health. It is important to be mindful of fructose consumption and limit the intake of added sugars in order to maintain overall health and well-being.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
