View PricingFree Sugar Intake Per Day
Free sugar intake refers to the amount of added or naturally occurring sugars in our diet. It includes both sugars added to food and drinks by manufacturers, as well as sugars naturally present in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides guidance on the ideal amount of free sugar intake per day to maintain a healthy diet.
According to the WHO, it is recommended that adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. This means that for an average adult with a daily caloric intake of 2,000 calories, the recommended maximum amount of free sugars would be 50 grams or 12 teaspoons. However, the WHO also suggests that further health benefits can be achieved by reducing free sugars intake to below 5% of total energy intake, equivalent to 25 grams or 6 teaspoons for adults.
Excessive sugar consumption has been linked to various health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental decay. By limiting free sugar intake, individuals can reduce their risk of developing these conditions and improve their overall health.
It is important to note that the WHO's recommendations for free sugar intake do not include sugars naturally present in whole fruits and vegetables. These sugars, although they are also classified as free sugars, come along with essential nutrients and fiber that contribute to a healthy diet. The focus is mainly on added sugars, such as those found in sugary beverages, processed foods, and desserts.
When it comes to children, the American Heart Association (AHA) suggests even lower limits for free sugar intake. The AHA recommends that children aged 2-18 consume no more than 25 grams or 6 teaspoons of added sugars per day. For children under 2 years old, it is advised to avoid added sugars altogether.
Awareness about free sugar intake and its impact on health has led to the implementation of sugar labeling regulations in many countries. This allows consumers to make informed choices when purchasing food and beverages. It is also advisable to check ingredient lists for various names of added sugars, such as sucrose, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, and maltose.
In conclusion, the recommended free sugar intake per day is less than 10% of total energy intake, which is approximately 50 grams or 12 teaspoons for adults. However, for additional health benefits, limiting free sugar intake to below 5% is ideal. It is essential to distinguish naturally occurring sugars from added sugars and be mindful of the sources of added sugars in our diet.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
