In 2022, the average expanded metal export price amounted to $3,269 per ton, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,319 per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($5,894 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($2,382 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Expanded Metal Price in Germany (CIF) - 2022

The average expanded metal import price stood at $3,349 per ton in 2022, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, expanded metal import price increased by +53.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($22,175 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($1,552 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+27.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Expanded Metal Exports in Germany

Expanded metal exports from Germany shrank to 6.3K tons in 2022, which is down by -14.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 6.7% against the previous year.

In value terms, expanded metal exports dropped to $21M in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $23M, and then declined in the following year.

Expanded Metal Imports in Germany

For the third year in a row, Germany recorded decline in supplies from abroad of iron or steel expanded metal, which decreased by -2.6% to 5.3K tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The smallest decline of -2.4% was in 2021.

In value terms, expanded metal imports rose to $18M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
