View PricingExcessive Sugar Intake
Excessive sugar intake refers to consuming an unhealthy amount of added sugars beyond the recommended daily limits. Added sugars are empty calories that provide little to no nutritional value but can significantly contribute to weight gain and various health problems when consumed in excess.
The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests limiting the daily added sugar intake to no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams) for men and 6 teaspoons (24 grams) for women. However, most people consume more than double the recommended amount due to the high presence of added sugars in processed foods, beverages, and sweets.
Effects of excessive sugar intake:
Weight gain and obesity:
Excessive sugar intake can lead to weight gain and obesity. Sugary foods and drinks are often high in calories but low in nutritional value, making it easy to consume excess calories without feeling full. Consuming too much sugar regularly can lead to increased fat accumulation and contribute to obesity, a known risk factor for many chronic diseases.
Increased risk of chronic diseases:
Consuming excessive amounts of sugar is linked to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. High sugar intake can raise blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, increasing the likelihood of developing diabetes. Additionally, it can lead to elevated triglyceride levels and increased risk of heart disease.
Poor dental health:
Sugar is a primary fuel source for harmful bacteria in the mouth, which produce acids that erode tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay. Regularly consuming sugary foods and drinks can increase the risk of cavities and other dental problems. Proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, are essential to mitigate the effects of excessive sugar intake on dental health.
Ways to reduce excessive sugar intake:
Reducing excessive sugar intake can have numerous health benefits. Here are some strategies to help minimize sugar consumption:
- Read food labels: Pay attention to the ingredient list and look for added sugars, which can have various names such as sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, or cane juice.
- Choose whole foods: Opt for whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains that contain naturally occurring sugars and are also rich in essential nutrients.
- Avoid sugary beverages: Soft drinks, fruit juices, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee or tea can contribute a significant amount of added sugars to the diet. Choose water, unsweetened tea, or infused water instead.
- Limit processed foods and sweets: Processed foods such as candy, cookies, pastries, and sugary cereals are often loaded with added sugars. Try to limit their consumption and opt for healthier alternatives.
- Be mindful of hidden sugars: Sugar can be found in unexpected foods like condiments, sauces, salad dressings, and even some savory snacks. Check the labels and choose low-sugar or sugar-free options when possible.
By reducing excessive sugar intake and opting for a balanced and nutritious diet, individuals can improve their overall health and reduce the risk of developing various chronic diseases associated with high sugar consumption.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
