Crude oil production further changed in 2012, with the United States experiencing a significant boost due to advancements in drilling techniques like hydraulic fracturing. The U.S. became the leading producer with a production volume of about 11,065 Tb/d. Russia and Saudi Arabia maintained their positions in the top three, followed by China and Canada. Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and Kuwait also remained significant producers.
