Crude Oil Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023

The average crude oil export price stood at $534 per ton in August 2023, picking up by 8.4% against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 8.5% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $546 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($587 per ton) and Malaysia ($580 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam ($465 per ton) and China ($507 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Crude Oil Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average crude oil import price amounted to $563 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 7.3% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $737 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($575 per ton) and Vietnam ($570 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($470 per ton) and Libya ($537 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (-1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Crude Oil Exports in Australia

Crude oil exports from Australia contracted to 15M tons in 2022, shrinking by -4.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 16M tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, crude oil exports surged to $10.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 156%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

    For the third year in a row, Australia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of crude petroleum oil, which decreased by -15.5% to 10M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decline.

    In value terms, crude oil imports surged to $7.3B in 2022. In general, imports saw a deep downturn.
