Cocoa Powder Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
The average cocoa powder import price stood at $3,343 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 10% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 19% month-to-month. The import price peaked in July 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Singapore ($4,460 per ton) and Ghana ($3,872 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($3,117 per ton) and Indonesia ($3,282 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cocoa Powder Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
The average cocoa powder export price stood at $5,053 per ton in July 2023, rising by 19% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 26% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $5,823 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($12,084 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($2,408 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cocoa Powder Imports in South Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of cocoa powder (not sweetened) decreased by -30.2% to 5.9K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 8.4K tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, cocoa powder imports declined dramatically to $17M in 2022. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $22M, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year.
