Coal Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average coal export price amounted to $132 per ton, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 56%. The export price peaked at $135 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($632 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($113 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+18.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coal Price in Australia (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average coal import price amounted to $311 per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 80% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $318 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,020 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($162 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coal Exports in Australia

In 2022, shipments abroad of coal was finally on the rise to reach 744M tons after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coal exports surged to $98.2B in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas purchases of coal were finally on the rise to reach 194K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline.

In value terms, coal imports skyrocketed to $60M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
