In value terms, coal other than lignite production declined markedly to $981.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 71%. Global production peaked at $1,164.7B in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of coal other than lignite production was China (3,907M tons), comprising approx. 52% of total volume. Moreover, coal other than lignite production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (702M tons), sixfold. Indonesia (643M tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.6% share.

In China, coal other than lignite production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+2.4% per year) and Indonesia (+5.2% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Coal Other than Lignite

In 2022, approx. 1,122M tons of coal other than lignites were imported worldwide; which is down by -5.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12%. Global imports peaked at 1,202M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coal other than lignite imports soared to $274.2B in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

India (234M tons), Japan (183M tons) and China (163M tons) represented roughly 52% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Korea (52M tons), committing a 4.7% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (46M tons), Germany (43M tons), Turkey (37M tons), Malaysia (35M tons), the Philippines (32M tons), Vietnam (31M tons), the Netherlands (22M tons), Thailand (21M tons) and Poland (20M tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +33.4%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($59.3B), India ($49B) and China ($30.3B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 51% share of global imports. Taiwan (Chinese), Germany, South Korea, Turkey, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +41.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average coal other than lignite import price amounted to $244 per ton, surging by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw resilient growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($353 per ton), while Thailand ($126 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 9.1%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at 1,320M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coal other than lignite exports skyrocketed to $262.7B in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

Indonesia (360M tons) and Australia (339M tons) represented roughly 57% of total exports in 2022. Russia (189M tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by the United States (6.3%), South Africa (5.8%) and Colombia (4.6%). Canada (36M tons) held a minor share of total exports.
