Clay Price in Uganda (CIF) - 2022

The average clay import price stood at $648 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -23.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $846 per ton in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($979 per ton), while the price for Italy ($307 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Clay Price in Uganda (FOB) - 2022

The average clay export price stood at $178 per ton in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $190 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($1,000 per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($132 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+20.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Clay Imports in Uganda

In 2022, purchases abroad of clays decreased by -39.8% to 268 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 625 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, clay imports contracted markedly to $174K in 2022. In general, imports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $505K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Clay Exports in Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of clays decreased by -25.7% to 567 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 78% against the previous year.

In value terms, clay exports reduced to $101K in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year.
