Bentonite Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average bentonite import price amounted to $527 per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a measured increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, bentonite import price increased by +87.0% against May 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 89% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $579 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($931 per ton), while the price for China ($341 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Bentonite Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022
The average bentonite export price stood at $304 per ton in 2022, rising by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $378 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($487 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($155 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Bentonite Imports in Australia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of bentonite, when their volume decreased by -54.7% to 29K tons. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 65K tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, bentonite imports soared to $14M in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2022, shipments abroad of bentonite decreased by -56.9% to 10K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports faced a sharp setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 24K tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
