Battered Fish Fillet Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average battered fish fillet import price amounted to $6,542 per ton, waning by -2.8% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 14% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $7,175 per ton. From October 2022 to August 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($9,327 per ton), while the price for China ($4,621 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Battered Fish Fillet Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average battered fish fillet export price amounted to $2,374 per ton, dropping by -14.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $12,297 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for New Zealand.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Malaysia amounted to -3.2% per year.

Battered Fish Fillet Imports in Australia

For the fourth consecutive year, Australia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs, which increased by 17% to 13K tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, battered fish fillet imports skyrocketed to $86M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Battered Fish Fillet Exports in Australia

In 2022, overseas shipments of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs decreased by -59.7% to 451 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 130%.

In value terms, battered fish fillet exports declined rapidly to $1.1M in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.1M, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
