Base Metal Closure Price in the UK (CIF) - 2023
In May 2023, the average base metal closure import price amounted to $6,639 per ton, shrinking by -3.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $7,138 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($8,512 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($3,923 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Base Metal Closure Price in the UK (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average base metal closure export price amounted to $9,400 per ton, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($14,362 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($7,255 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Base Metal Closure Imports in the UK
In 2022, approx. 81K tons of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids were imported into the UK; with an increase of 15% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 108K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, base metal closure imports skyrocketed to $496M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, approx. 25K tons of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids were exported from the UK; approximately reflecting 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 5.8%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 28K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, base metal closure exports soared to $237M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
