Barley Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average barley export price amounted to $305 per ton, surging by 41% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 570%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,380 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($364 per ton) and Austria ($339 per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($283 per ton) and Italy ($287 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Barley Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022
The average barley import price stood at $346 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $811 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($1,170 per ton), while the price for Germany ($250 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Barley Exports in Hungary
In 2022, overseas shipments of barley decreased by -34.4% to 530K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,344% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 829K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, barley exports shrank to $162M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +23.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +88.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 65%.

Barley Imports in Hungary
In 2022, overseas purchases of barley decreased by -33.9% to 30K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 159%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 46K tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, barley imports dropped to $10M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 92%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $11M, and then contracted in the following year.
