Barley Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average barley export price amounted to $253 per ton, flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 7.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $330 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($314 per ton), while the average price for exports to Peru ($190 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+16.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Barley Price in Australia (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $2,615 per ton, surging by 50% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($3,364 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,594 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+16.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Barley Exports in Australia

In 2022, shipments abroad of barley decreased by -8.3% to 8M tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 105% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 8.7M tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, barley exports surged to $2.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of barley decreased by -67.8% to 25 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22% against the previous year.

In value terms, barley imports declined sharply to $65K in 2022. Overall, imports showed a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $179K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
