Baby Food Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average baby food export price amounted to $5,075 per ton, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, baby food export price increased by +31.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 56%. The export price peaked at $5,277 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($7,710 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($3,644 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Baby Food Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023

The average baby food import price stood at $8,222 per ton in July 2023, flattening at the previous month. Over the period from September 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9,450 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($15,140 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($5,478 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Baby Food Exports in South Africa

In 2022, baby food exports from South Africa rose slightly to 12K tons, picking up by 2.7% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, baby food exports expanded sharply to $59M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
