Artificial Graphite Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
The average artificial graphite import price stood at $929 per ton in December 2021, growing by 2.8% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2020 to December 2021, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2021 when the average import price increased by 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in December 2021.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +3.3% per month.
Artificial Graphite Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
The average artificial graphite export price stood at $895 per ton in December 2021, which is down by -6.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2021 when the average export price increased by 237% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,940 per ton. From July 2021 to December 2021, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($1,279 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($501 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+13.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Artificial Graphite Imports in Malaysia
Artificial graphite imports into Malaysia skyrocketed to 312K tons in 2022, picking up by 49% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 89%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 414K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial graphite imports surged to $179M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.6% against 2020 indices.
