Apple Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

The average apple export price stood at $1,653 per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,659 per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($2,368 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($915 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Apple Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

The average apple import price stood at $2,557 per ton in 2022, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apple import price increased by +126.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to +36.9% per year.

Apple Exports in New Zealand

In 2022, shipments abroad of apples decreased by -4.2% to 341K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 400K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple exports dropped slightly to $564M in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 3.4%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.3K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple imports declined rapidly to $64K in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a dramatic decline. The smallest decline of -3.5% was in 2020.
