Ammonium Thiosulfate Production

Ammonium thiosulfate is an important fertilizer and industrial chemical that is produced by reacting ammonia and sulfur dioxide along with elemental sulfur in an aqueous medium. The resulting solution contains ammonium thiosulfate along with ammonium sulfate and elemental sulfur.

The production of ammonium thiosulfate begins with the reaction of ammonia gas and sulfur dioxide in a reactor. The reaction takes place in the presence of air and an activated carbon catalyst that helps to promote the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur. The key reaction is:

NH₃ + 2SO₂ + 2H₂O + S → (NH₄)₂S₂O₃

The reaction is exothermic, so the reactor is cooled to maintain a constant temperature. The ammonia gas is typically introduced into the reactor in a controlled manner to maintain the desired reaction rate, while the sulfur dioxide and air are introduced at a rate that is proportional to the ammonia flow rate.

The resulting ammonium thiosulfate solution is then cooled and treated with additional sulfur to convert any remaining sulfur dioxide into elemental sulfur. The ammonium sulfate byproduct is removed from the solution by filtration or centrifugation, leaving a concentrated ammonium thiosulfate solution that is ready for use as a fertilizer or industrial chemical.
