Added sugar intake refers to the consumption of sugars that are added to foods and beverages during processing or preparation. These sugars are not naturally present in the food and are added for various purposes such as taste enhancement, preservation, or texture improvement.
The excessive consumption of added sugars has become a major health concern around the world. High intake of added sugars is associated with a wide range of health problems including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dental cavities, and metabolic disorders.
Recommended Daily Intake
The American Heart Association (AHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have provided guidelines regarding added sugar intake. The AHA recommends a maximum intake of added sugars of no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day for women and 38 grams (9 teaspoons) per day for men. The WHO suggests that added sugars should be limited to less than 10% of total energy intake, which is approximately 50 grams (12 teaspoons) per day for an average adult.
Sources of Added Sugars
Added sugars are commonly found in a wide range of processed and packaged foods such as soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, pastries, ice cream, and sweetened cereals. They can also be present in hidden forms in savory foods like ketchup, barbecue sauce, salad dressings, and bread.
Impact on Health
Excessive added sugar intake can contribute to weight gain and obesity. When consumed in excess, added sugars provide empty calories, which means they add calories to the diet without providing any essential nutrients. These empty calories can lead to an imbalance between energy consumed and energy expended, resulting in weight gain over time.
High added sugar intake can also lead to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Consuming large amounts of added sugars regularly can disrupt the body's insulin production and impair insulin sensitivity, leading to insulin resistance and eventually diabetes.
Furthermore, excessive added sugar consumption is strongly associated with an increased risk of heart disease. High intake of added sugars can lead to elevated triglyceride levels, increased blood pressure, inflammation, and insulin resistance, all of which are risk factors for heart disease.
Dental cavities are another common consequence of high added sugar intake. Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars, producing acids that erode tooth enamel and contribute to tooth decay and cavities.
Reducing Added Sugar Intake
To reduce added sugar intake, it is important to read food labels carefully and choose products with lower sugar content. Paying attention to ingredients lists can help identify hidden sources of added sugars. Opting for whole, unprocessed foods and cooking meals at home can also help control sugar intake.
Replacing sugary drinks with water, herbal teas, or unsweetened beverages can significantly reduce added sugar consumption. Choosing fresh fruits as snacks instead of sugary desserts or candies is another way to satisfy sweet cravings without excessive sugar intake.
Overall, reducing added sugar intake plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy diet and preventing various health problems. By being mindful of sugar consumption and making healthier choices, individuals can improve their overall well-being and reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with high added sugar intake.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
