Acrylonitrile Manufacturing Process

Acrylonitrile is a colorless liquid compound that is primarily used in the manufacturing of acrylic fibers, resins, and rubber products. It is an important intermediate in the production of a wide range of industrial and consumer goods.

The manufacturing process of acrylonitrile involves several steps, including feedstock preparation, catalytic ammoxidation, purification, and recovery. Here is an overview of the process:

Feedstock Preparation:

The primary raw materials for acrylonitrile production are propylene and ammonia. Propylene, which is derived from petroleum or natural gas, is first purified to remove impurities such as sulfur compounds and moisture. Ammonia is also purified to remove impurities like water and heavy metals.

Catalytic Ammoxidation:

In the next step, propylene and ammonia are mixed together and fed into a reactor vessel. This mixture is then passed over a catalyst, which is typically a mixture of metal oxides. The catalyst promotes the reaction between propylene, ammonia, and air to produce acrylonitrile. The reaction is highly exothermic and occurs at high temperatures (around 400-500 degrees Celsius) and pressures.

Purification:

The reaction gases leaving the reactor contain not only acrylonitrile but also other by-products and impurities. These gases are cooled and scrubbed to remove impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, and unreacted propylene and ammonia. Distillation is then used to separate the acrylonitrile from the remaining gases and by-products.

Recovery:

After purification, the acrylonitrile is typically further purified through a series of distillation steps to remove any remaining impurities. The purified acrylonitrile is then stored for transportation and further processing.
