ZeroHash Applies for National Trust Bank Charter for Digital Asset Services

ZeroHash has submitted an application for a national trust bank charter to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. The proposed entity, ZeroHash National Trust Bank, would not engage in retail banking activities such as lending, deposit accounts, or FDIC insurance.

Instead, the firm aims to provide a range of specialized digital asset services. These would encompass custody for digital and fiat assets, custodial staking and validation, transfer agent duties, trade execution, stablecoin management, and settlement, clearing, and escrow operations.

Previously, a potential acquisition of the company by Mastercard was discussed but did not proceed. More recently, ZeroHash secured funding that valued the company at $1.5 billion.

The OCC has seen a notable increase in digital asset licensing applications. Other entities on the list include Morgan Stanley Digital Trust and World Liberty Trust Company, which is affiliated with the family of the current President of the United States. Several other firms received OCC banking charters in December.

No timeline is available for a decision on ZeroHash's submission. Separately, fintech company Revolut has also applied for a U.S. banking charter, though it seeks to operate as a full-service bank with checking and savings accounts. Revolut has indicated the United States is important for its global expansion and has shown interest in cryptocurrency services. The firm was recently chosen to participate in a UK regulatory sandbox focused on stablecoin testing.
