Young Americans Redefine the American Dream as Stability, not Upward Mobility

Research from the Savannah College of Art and Design indicates a generational shift in how the American dream is perceived. For many younger citizens, the aspiration is no longer centered on dramatic upward mobility but on securing fundamental elements of a stable life. These include housing, reliable employment, health care, and education, which are seen as prerequisites for comfort.

The study suggests that members of Generation Z and millennials view the journey toward this stability as more difficult and uncertain than it was for their predecessors. Consequently, the traditional concept of the dream is perceived by many as outdated or unattainable. Financial security is identified as the most critical component of this modern interpretation.

Current conditions present significant challenges, including a competitive job market, persistent price increases following a period of high inflation, technological disruption, and a divided political environment. While not the first generation to express skepticism, young people report believing the path is considerably more arduous now.

An analysis found it now costs $5 million to fund the dream over a lifetime. The definition of a comfortable standard of living in the current era encompasses several costly elements, from vehicles and childcare to college tuition and retirement savings, which have become financially challenging for many.

The analysis points to housing and health care expenses as primary obstacles. A substantial majority of young respondents consider homeownership an important part of the dream, yet also see it as the largest barrier to achieving it.
