Women-Led Enterprise Rebuilds Maluku's Spice Value Chain
A women-led enterprise in Maluku, Indonesia, is working to rebuild the region's spice value chain to improve farmer livelihoods, according to a report from AgTechNavigator. The company, SHV, partners with local communities to develop sustainable economies based on forest spices like nutmeg, vanilla, kenari, and cloves.
Limited market access and insufficient support for post-harvest practices have historically kept incomes low, pushing some toward extractive activities and discouraging youth from agriculture. SHV's approach centers on establishing fair and transparent pricing, providing early price signals to farmers to reduce uncertainty.
The firm partners with over 700 farmers across 11 groups in seven villages, supporting the management of approximately 13,000 hectares under Social Forestry permits. It encourages productivity improvements through simple practices like pruning and natural pest management, which can significantly increase yields. A graded pricing system offers higher payments for meeting improved quality standards, linking new practices to economic benefits.
Retaining Local Value
Another element of the model involves establishing local aggregation and processing hubs. These hubs deploy simple technologies, such as solar drying systems, to improve quality and aim to keep economic value within Maluku rather than transferring processing to other regions. The company plans to build a new technology hub to utilize agricultural waste, like discarded nutmeg fruit, creating an additional income stream.
Investment and Scaling
SHV has faced challenges convincing investors of its commercial viability due to operational complexity, high logistical costs on a small island, and perceived risks associated with smallholder farmers. Last August, the venture builder Terratai invested in the company. Terratai, supported through an Australian government initiative, stated it would take an active role in supporting SHV's commercial operations and long-term impact.
The company's activities are described as having social, economic, and environmental implications, including higher incomes and stronger forest stewardship. However, leadership acknowledges a current lack of capacity to systematically measure this impact as it seeks to scale.
