Which Country Imports the Most Textile Machinery in the World?

In 2016, the global textile machinery imports totaled 645K tonnes, coming down by -8.1% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a measured increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, textile machinery imports increased by +46.5% against its level of 2012. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when import increased by 31% from the previous year level. Global textile machinery import peaked of 702K tonnes in 2015, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, textile machinery imports totaled $3B in 2016. Overall, textile machinery imports continue to indicate a noticeable deduction. Over the period under review, global textile machinery imports reached its maximum level of $4.2B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Textile Machinery Imports By Country

In 2016, the Netherlands (189K tonnes) represented the major importer for textile machinery, creating 29% of total imports. It was distantly followed by China (91K tonnes), Germany (78K tonnes), Japan (58K tonnes), and Italy (43K tonnes), together achieving 42% share of total textile machinery imports. Viet Nam (20K tonnes), Turkey (18K tonnes), India (18K tonnes), Indonesia (14K tonnes), and Spain (10K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

The Netherlands was also the fastest growing in terms of the textile machinery imports, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Viet Nam (+10.6%), China (+5.6%), and Spain (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Italy, Germany, and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.7%), India (-5.9%), and Turkey (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (3%), and India (2%) increased significantly, the share of Viet Nam (-1.9%), China (-5.4%), and the Netherlands (-26.0%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($567M), India ($380M) and Viet Nam ($326M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, together accounting for 42% of global imports.Turkey, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

The Netherlands (+44.8% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the textile machinery imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Textile Machinery Import Prices By Country

The average textile machinery import price stood at $4,667 per tonne in 2016, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, textile machinery import price continues to indicate a drastic reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when import increased by 49% against the previous year level. In that year, average textile machinery import price reached its maximum level of $9,069 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average textile machinery import price failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was India ($21 per kg), while Japan ($136 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of textile machinery import prices was attained by the Netherlands (+13.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
