In 2016, approx. 159K tonnes of plaiting material were imported worldwide; standing approx. at the previous year figure. In general, plaiting material imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when it surged by 13% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global plaiting material imports attained its maximum volume of 239K tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, plaiting material imports amounted to $376M in 2016. In general, plaiting material imports continue to indicate a pronounced deduction. Over the period under review, global plaiting material imports reached its maximum level of $586M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Plaiting Material Imports By Country

In 2016, Japan (47K tonnes) was the main importer for plaiting material, generating 30% of total imports. France (12K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Canada (9.3K tonnes), Spain (8.3K tonnes), Italy (7.9K tonnes), and Germany (7.6K tonnes). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. The following importers - the UK (4.7K tonnes), Australia (4.7K tonnes), Belgium (4.1K tonnes), the Netherlands (3.6K tonnes), Viet Nam (3.3K tonnes), and South Korea (3.2K tonnes) together made up 15% of total imports.

Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -6.8% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Viet Nam (+32.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Viet Nam emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2007-2016. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-4.0%), Germany (-4.8%), Australia (-6.0%), France (-6.4%), the Netherlands (-6.7%), Spain (-7.3%), Belgium (-8.8%), the UK (-5.3%), and South Korea (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Japan (26%), France (6%), Spain (5%), Belgium (3%), Germany (3%), South Korea (3%), Italy (2%), Australia (2%), the Netherlands (2%), and the UK (2%) increased significantly, the share of Viet Nam (-1.9%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($142M) constitutes the largest market for imported plaiting material worldwide, making up 38% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($20M), with the share of 5% of global imports. It was followed by France, with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of plaiting material imports in Japan declined by -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-0.6% per year) and France (-6.8% per year).

Plaiting Material Import Prices By Country

The average plaiting material import price stood at $2,372 per tonne in 2016, shrinking by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, plaiting material import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, an increase of 20% against the previous year level. In that year, average plaiting material import price attained its maximum level of $2,859 per tonne. From 2013 to 2016, growth of average plaiting material import price failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Japan ($3,038 per tonne), while Canada ($595 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of plaiting material import prices was attained by Japan (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
