Which Country Imports the Most Mattresses in the World?

In 2016, the global marble imports totaled 9.6M tonnes, lowering by ;3.3% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a slight growth from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, marble imports decreased by ;28.3% against its level of 2013. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when imports increased by 46% y;o;y. Global marble import peaked of 13M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, marble imports totaled $1.9B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a temperate increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, marble imports decreased by ;27.7% against its level of 2013. Global marble import peaked of $2.7B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Marble Imports By Country

China (6.6M tonnes) prevails in marble imports structure, accounting for 6.6M tonnes, which was approx. 69% of total imports in 2016. It was distantly followed by India (623K tonnes), achieving 6% share of total marble imports. Italy (289K tonnes), Egypt (279K tonnes), Togo (145K tonnes), and Algeria (145K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Egypt (+38.7%), India (+15.1%), and Algeria (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2007;2016. By contrast, Togo (;1.6%), and Italy (;9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Italy increased by 4% percentage points, while Egypt (;2.7%), India (;4.6%), and China (;22.1%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported marble worldwide, making up 63% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by India ($216M), with the share of 11% of global imports. It was followed by Italy, with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of marble imports in China expanded at +6.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+15.8% per year) and Italy (;3.4% per year).

Marble Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for marble amounted to $200 per tonne, descending by ;4.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when import increased by 11% against the previous year level. In that year, average marble import price attained its maximum level of $220 per tonne. From 2015 to 2016, growth of average marble import price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Italy ($359 per tonne), while Togo ($22 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of marble import prices was attained by Italy (+6.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mattress Imports By Country

China (1.3M tonnes) represented the key importing country with an import of around 1.3M tonnes, which finished at 30% of total imports. The U.S. (535K tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (237K tonnes). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports. Japan (188K tonnes), Germany (177K tonnes), France (118K tonnes), the UK (109K tonnes), Australia (96K tonnes), the Netherlands (79K tonnes), India (69K tonnes), Belgium (67K tonnes), and Canada (66K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Australia (+6.3%), the Netherlands (+6.3%), Germany (+5.4%), the U.S. (+5.0%), France (+4.2%), Belgium (+3.0%), Canada (+2.8%), Japan (+2.4%), the UK (+2.1%), India (+1.5%), and Poland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Australia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2007-2016. Germany (-1.5%), and the U.S. (-4.3%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($3.4B) constitutes the largest market for imported mattress worldwide, making up 25% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($1.2B), with the share of 9% of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 7%.

In the U.S., mattress imports stood at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+3.7% per year) and Germany (+3.0% per year).

Mattress Import Prices By Country

The average mattress import price stood at $3,178 per tonne in 2016, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%.The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, an increase of 10% from the previous year level. Global mattress import peaked of $3,427 per tonne in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Canada ($7,531 per tonne), while China ($120 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of mattress import prices was attained by China (+17.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
