Which Country Exports the Most Slate in the World?

In 2016, the global slate exports stood at 529K tonnes, rising by 9% against the previous year level. Overall, slate exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when exports increased by 52% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global slate exports reached its maximum volume of 844K tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, slate exports totaled $80M in 2016. Overall, slate exports continue to indicate a perceptible drop. Over the period under review, global slate exports reached its maximum level of $109M in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Slate Exports By Country

France (117K tonnes), India (102K tonnes), Kyrgyzstan (90K tonnes), and China (66K tonnes) represented roughly 71% of total exports of slate in 2016. It was distantly followed by the UK (36K tonnes), and Spain (29K tonnes), together creating 12% share of total slate exports. The following exporters - Poland (23K tonnes) held approx. 4% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of slate exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (+131.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($22M), China ($16M) and Spain ($12M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 63% of global exports.France, the UK, Poland and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

Poland (+116.4% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of slate exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Slate Export Prices By Country

The average slate export price stood at $152 per tonne in 2016, coming down by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 33% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average slate export price reached its maximum level of $158 per tonne in 2015, falling back in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Spain ($430 per tonne), while Kyrgyzstan ($8 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of slate export prices was attained by the UK (+13.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
