Which Country Exports the Most Silk Yarn in the World?

In 2016, the amount of silk yarn exported worldwide stood at 4.9K tonnes, descending by -1.9% against the previous year figure. Overall, silk yarn exports continue to indicate a deep drop. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, an increase of 8% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global silk yarn exports attained its maximum volume of 9.2K tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, silk yarn exports amounted to $273M in 2016. In general, silk yarn exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global silk yarn exports reached its maximum level of $379M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Silk Yarn Exports By Country

China (1.9K tonnes) represented the major exporter of silk yarn in the world, resulting at 1.9K tonnes, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2016. Romania (1K tonnes) ranks second globally in silk yarn exports with a 21% share, following Viet Nam (12%), Brazil (11%), and Italy (7%). The following exporters - Kazakhstan (104 tonnes), and Germany (91 tonnes) held near 4% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of silk yarn exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Romania (+0.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, China ($98M), Romania ($64M) and Viet Nam ($39M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 74% share of global exports.

Romania (+5.2% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the silk yarn exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Silk Yarn Export Prices By Country

The average silk yarn export price stood at $56 per kg in 2016, going down by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, silk yarn export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 30% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average silk yarn export price attained its maximum level of $65 per kg in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($72 per kg), while Kazakhstan ($1,828 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of silk yarn export prices was attained by Viet Nam (+7.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
