Which Country Eats the Most Rabbit Meat in the World?

Global rabbit meat consumption amounted to 1,599 thousand tonnes in 2015, ascending by +2.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global rabbit meat consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global rabbit meat consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Rabbit Meat Consumption

With nearly 761 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading rabbit meat consuming country, making up 48% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Italy (275 thousand tonnes) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (153 thousand tonnes), with a share of 17% and 10%, respectively. Moreover, rabbit meat consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Italy threefold. They were followed by Egypt with a 5% of global consumption share and Spain with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of rabbit meat consumption in China stood at +3.2%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (+1.9% per year) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+4.0% per year).

The highest levels of rabbit or hare meat per capita consumption was registered in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (6.07 kg/year), followed by Italy (4.60 kg/year), Spain (1.22 kg/year), Egypt (0.78 kg/year) and China (0.54 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of rabbit or hare meat was estimated at 0.24 kg/year in 2015.

In Democratic People's Republic of Korea, per capita rabbit or hare meat consumption has grown noticably (+3.4% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Democratic People's Republic of Korea per capita consumption reached 6.07 kg/year as compared with 4.64 kg/year in 2007.
