Which Country Consumes the Most Safflower Seeds in the World?

Global safflower seed consumption amounted to 787 thousand tonnes in 2015, ascending by +7.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global safflower seed consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +24% from the previous year level. In that year, the global safflower seed consumption attained its maximum volume of 839 thousand tonnes. From 2013 to 2015, the total safflower seed consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Safflower Seeds Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Kazakhstan (154 thousand tonnes), Russia (118 thousand tonnes), the United States (105 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 49% of total consumption. They were followed by India with a 12% of global consumption share and Turkey with a 11% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of safflower seed consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Russia (+171.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Per capita safflower seed in Kazakhstan was estimated at 8.74 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.72 kg/year. Kazakhstan was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of safflower seed, followed by Turkey (1.08 kg/year), Russia (0.82 kg/year), the United States (0.33 kg/year) and India (0.07 kg/year).

In Russia, per capita safflower seed consumption has grown noticably (+171.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Russia per capita consumption reached 8.74 kg/year as compared with 0.00 kg/year in 2007.
