Welsh Government Launches Renewable Energy Sector Deal for 2030 & 2035 Targets

According to Offshore Energy, the Welsh government has initiated a strategic partnership with industry known as the Renewable Energy Sector Deal. The agreement is intended to support the meeting of renewable energy targets and to realize economic potential from renewable resources.

Central goals within the deal include generating seventy percent of annual electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2030 and achieving one hundred percent by 2035. A further objective is to deliver a minimum of 1.5 GW of locally owned renewable energy capacity by 2035.

The Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, launched the Sector Deal on March 18. The launch occurred during a visit to the Morlais tidal energy project located in Anglesey.

This launch coincided with the release of a recent report on energy generation and use in Wales. That report indicated that renewable electricity generation in 2024 was equivalent to fifty-four percent of the nation's electricity consumption.

Evans stated that the ambition is to become a global leader in renewable energy, creating employment and green growth to increase prosperity and assist with living costs. She also noted that ongoing conflict has underscored the value of energy independence, adding that the deal will establish a foundation for future renewable energy delivery to benefit the economy, environment, and security.

The Sector Deal was developed collaboratively by a Task and Finish Group comprising developers and community organizations.
