Virginia Senate Votes to End Data Center Tax Break

According to the Associated Press, Virginia senators have voted to end a projected annual tax break for data centers. The proposal would require the industry to resume paying a minimum sales tax. The vote follows nearly two decades during which the state offered tech companies a tax break on equipment and software, a period that saw Virginia become a major data center hub.

The debate in Virginia coincides with a broader national trend of communities and politicians expressing concerns about data center expansion. Some opponents of the tax change warn it could halt new construction of data centers in the state. A state tax department report indicates the industry has made significant investments and created numerous jobs in Virginia over a recent two-year period.

The proposal's passage is not assured, as it must still clear the state House of Delegates. The issue has sparked disagreement among state Democrats, partly due to an approaching budget deadline. The state's governor has expressed caution about altering commitments to businesses that have invested in Virginia.

Supporters of the tax change, including a key Democratic senator who chairs the finance committee, argue it is necessary to fund other budget priorities. The senator cited potential uses for the revenue, including support for teachers, health insurance, transit, tax rebates, and childcare.
