Vietnam's U.S. Trade Surplus Hits $19 Billion, Leading All Partners in January

According to a Reuters report, Vietnam generated the biggest trade surplus with the United States in January, surpassing both Mexico and China. This shift occurred as Vietnamese exports increased significantly while direct shipments from China to the U.S. declined.

Official U.S. data indicates Vietnam's surplus with the United States reached $19 billion for the month, the highest figure among all U.S. trading partners. Taiwan, Mexico, and China followed in the ranking. Vietnamese exports to the U.S. rose 53% year-over-year in January to more than $20 billion. During the same period, U.S. imports from China fell by 46%.

Vietnam's trade surplus with the United States has exceeded China's since the second quarter of 2025 and was second only to Mexico for the last three quarters of that year. The total surplus for all of 2025 was $178 billion.

The increase in Vietnamese exports coincides with higher tariffs on Chinese goods. Concurrently, Vietnam's imports of Chinese products, many intended for re-export, hit a record level in January according to Vietnamese data. The administration of the current President of the United States has frequently alleged that Vietnam serves as a conduit for Chinese goods, which may face lower duties if labeled as Vietnamese.

Goods deemed to be illegally transshipped are subject to U.S. tariffs of 40%, though specific criteria for that determination have not been outlined. New investigations into possible unfair trade practices by Vietnam and other nations were initiated recently.

Washington imposed 20% tariffs on Vietnamese goods in August. Following a Supreme Court ruling in February that struck down global tariffs as illegal, a 10% global tariff was implemented for 150 days. Trade negotiations between Hanoi and Washington have been ongoing for months but have not concluded, with officials citing the large trade gap and disagreements over proposed U.S. tariff rates on Vietnamese goods.
