Vietnam's First Licensed Crypto Exchanges: Five Firms in Pilot Program Race

According to a Reuters report, companies in Vietnam are vying to establish the nation's inaugural licensed cryptocurrency exchanges. This follows a government resolution from February outlining a pilot program for domestic digital asset exchanges, which could begin imminently.

A finance ministry document indicates five companies have cleared an initial qualification stage. The list includes affiliates of three private banks: Techcombank, VPBank, and LPBank. A stockbroker, VIX Securities, and a large private conglomerate, Sun Group, are also among the qualified entities. Sun Group and VPBank have confirmed their applications.

Vietnam is considered one of the world's most active cryptocurrency markets, ranking fourth globally in a recent adoption index. Transactions involving traders from the country were estimated to surpass a substantial figure in the year leading to last June.

Authorities have expressed concern over cryptocurrency use, citing risks related to capital movements. In response, the finance ministry is preparing regulations that would forbid Vietnamese nationals from using overseas crypto trading platforms. The country maintains strict controls on cross-border capital transfers, and domestic investment options are seen as limited, with many savers turning to assets like gold and property.

While owning cryptocurrencies is not explicitly banned, they are not recognized as legal tender. Consequently, most local traders currently utilize foreign-based exchanges. Industry observers note that successful domestic exchanges could retain transaction fees within Vietnam and aid the growth of its digital financial services sector.
