Vatican Launches Ethical Divestment Initiative Targeting Mining Industry

According to a report from Mining.com, the Vatican has initiated an international project aimed at encouraging disinvestment from the mining industry. The effort is supported by senior Church leaders and approximately forty other faith-based institutions. Officials stated the initiative would pressure companies to ensure just treatment of workers and protect local environments, with the threat of investment withdrawal as a consequence.

A Vatican official noted that in many parts of the world, the expansion of mining has led to significant social tensions and serious environmental damage. The official described the project as an act of alignment with faith and the defense of human dignity. The late Pope Francis had frequently called for stricter business practices in the sector during his tenure, though this marks the first formal disinvestment campaign from the Vatican. In 2020, the Church had urged Catholics to divest from the arms and fossil fuel industries.

A coordinator of the new project said it would call on Catholics and faith groups to pull investments from mining as an ethical reaction to its social and environmental effects. The Vatican did not disclose which organizations are participating or identify any specific mining companies that might be targeted.

The launch comes as global demand for minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and copper is projected to rise sharply in the coming years, driven by needs for batteries and high-tech goods. Some mining companies have recognized a need to adjust their practices, with an industry group dedicated to responsible mining formed years ago. A cardinal involved in the launch said the initiative aims to help governments and business leaders understand that legality does not always equate to justice.
