A recent report from Euronews details how creative practices in Uzbekistan are embedded in daily life, unfolding in family courtyards and small workshops. Artistic traditions in Karakalpakstan are described as being closely tied to community and landscape.

A house in Nukus that previously belonged to a noted local painter now functions as a museum and creative space. The museum holds paintings from the 1960s to more recent times, covering styles from realism to impressionism and experimental approaches. It also displays traditional household items, crafts from the 19th century, and yurt decorations.

Nearby, women maintain the practice of suzani embroidery, incorporating patterns like rams horns and camel footprints with symbolic meaning. These works, which historically served as wall decorations, are still worn at weddings and celebrations. For many families, embroidery marks significant life events, with items like the beaded saukele headdress remaining a festive symbol for brides.

Pottery represents another regional craft. A local potter, who learned painting before turning to ceramics, runs a family workshop producing household and decorative items with the stated goal of reviving a tradition that had declined. The process for creating a single plate depicting a Silk Road caravan can take weeks.

Further south, in Surkhandarya, artisans in shared workshops reinterpret heritage for modern audiences. A jeweller designs ornaments inspired by national motifs, with some pieces intended for brides and others adapted for everyday wear. She also creates jewellery incorporating the colours of national flags for international visitors.

In Tashkent, a restored 18th-century mosque in the Okhun Gozar neighbourhood has been converted into a space called Gozar of Artisans. The initiative, supported by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, aims to bring artisans together and engage younger generations. The site preserves historic architectural elements while incorporating modern exhibition and workshop areas, hosting crafts like wood carving, metalwork, ceramics, and jewellery-making.

The report concludes that across the country, from Nukus to Surkhandarya and Tashkent, homes, museums, and restored monuments are becoming new points on a creative map where tradition is practiced, taught, and reinterpreted.
