USDA Slaughter Cattle Report for March 20, 2026: Formula Purchases at 15,056 Head

The Agricultural Marketing Service released its daily livestock report on March 20, 2026. The data covers direct slaughter cattle purchases made on a formula and negotiated grid basis.

For the morning of March 20, total formula net purchases reached 15,056 head. This figure consisted of 13,749 head on a dressed basis and 1,307 head on a live basis. Total negotiated grid net purchases were reported at 1,171 head, which included 561 dressed and 610 live.

Weekly comparisons show the total formula net volume for the current week to date was 165,718 head. The same period last week saw 169,763 head, while the same period last year recorded 183,816 head. For negotiated grid net purchases, the week to date volume was 23,402 head, compared to 19,353 head for the same period last week and 25,223 head for the same period last year.

Detailed pricing data for formula net purchases on a dressed basis showed an average net price of 374.51 for all steers and heifers. The weight range for these animals was between 720 and 1,199 pounds, with an average weight of 979 pounds. The price range extended from 334.82 to 388.46. For formula net purchases on a live basis, the average net price was 239.16, with weights ranging from 1,325 to 1,666 pounds and an average weight of 1,476 pounds.

For negotiated grid net purchases on a dressed basis, the average net price for all steers and heifers was 382.96. The weight range was from 836 to 1,073 pounds, with an average weight of 993 pounds. On a live basis for this category, the average net price was 245.85, with weights from 1,540 to 1,699 pounds and an average weight of 1,581 pounds.
