USDA Report: Weekly Slaughter Cattle Deliveries Decline as of March 20, 2026

Data from a USDA Agricultural Marketing Service report indicates a decrease in total cattle deliveries compared to the prior week. The report, dated March 20, 2026, shows total delivered cattle at 45,865 head, which is lower than the 47,575 head recorded a week earlier. The figure is also below the level from the same time last year, which was 50,654 head.

The cumulative weekly total for deliveries stands at 275,036 head, also down from both the previous week's 277,563 head and the year-ago period's 293,409 head. In contrast, the total number of cattle committed for future slaughter within approximately seven days saw an increase from the prior week, rising to 23,054 head from 15,229 head. The current committed total remains slightly below the 23,879 head reported for the same date last year.

Domestic Delivery and Commitment Breakdown

For domestic cattle already delivered to plants, the majority were sourced through formula arrangements, accounting for 58 percent of the delivered head count. Negotiated purchases made up 23 percent, while negotiated grid and forward contract methods represented 9 percent each. A significant portion of deliveries involved packer choices, with packers selecting the delivery date for 83 percent of cattle and the location for 50 percent.

Regarding domestic cattle committed for slaughter, formula arrangements again constituted the largest share at 64 percent. Negotiated purchases represented 20 percent of committed head count, with negotiated grid at 5 percent and forward contracts at 10 percent. Packer choice was also prevalent for future deliveries, affecting the date for 83 percent and the location for 66 percent of committed cattle.

Regional Origins and Imports

Nebraska was the largest regional source of delivered cattle on the report date, with 12,249 head. Kansas followed with 10,940 head, and Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico collectively supplied 7,552 head. A separate category listed 703 head originating from Canada.

For cattle committed to slaughter, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were the leading region with 6,819 head. Kansas and Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri followed with 4,020 and 4,013 head, respectively. The data also noted that 1,589 head were scheduled to be shipped out of Nebraska for slaughter elsewhere, while 34 head were scheduled to leave Kansas.
