USDA Report: Strong Beef Sales Volume for Choice Cuts and Ground Beef in March 2026

Data from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service shows the volume of negotiated boxed beef sales for delivery in a 22 to 90 day period. The report, dated March 16, 2026, details sales on a free-on-board plant basis with values in U.S. dollars per hundredweight.

The current volume for Choice beef cuts was reported at approximately 5.8 million pounds, equivalent to 144 loads. Select cuts saw a volume of about 135,669 pounds, or roughly 3 loads. Ground beef volume was reported at nearly 2.8 million pounds, equating to almost 70 loads. Trimmings volume was listed at around 174,074 pounds, or just over 4 loads.

Among specific primal cuts, several showed no trading activity for the period. For Choice cuts with various fat limitations, several items recorded sales. Boneless chuck roll trades involved 10 transactions for about 230,768 pounds, with a weighted average price. Boneless brisket trades numbered 21 for over 1.3 million pounds, also with a weighted average price. Outside round cuts saw 49 trades for approximately 1.8 million pounds. Eye of round cuts had 7 trades for about 73,946 pounds. Short loin cuts recorded 10 trades for roughly 201,795 pounds. Bottom sirloin flap cuts had 7 trades for about 162,070 pounds. Trimmed tenderloin cuts saw 3 trades for about 22,778 pounds.

For ground beef derived from steer or heifer sources, the 81% lean product recorded 35 trades for nearly 1.5 million pounds, with a reported price range and weighted average. No trading activity was reported for other lean percentages in that category. The report also listed no activity for all Select cut items and for all blended ground beef items.
