U.S. Treasury to Take Over Collection of Defaulted Federal Student Loans

The U.S. Treasury Department is set to become the new collector for defaulted federal student loans. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the Department of Education announced that Treasury will assume operations in three phases, starting with the collection of defaulted debt and the use of private agencies to help borrowers enter rehabilitation programs.

Scope of the Student Loan Portfolio

Federal Student Aid data indicates there are 42.8 million borrowers with federal student loans. As of December 2025, approximately 7.7 million borrowers with $180 billion in outstanding debt were in default. An additional 4 million borrowers are in late-stage delinquency, meaning close to 12 million are either in or nearing default.

Rationale and Response

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the department's existing systems for managing difficult loans would lead to more efficient collections and lower costs for taxpayers. He cited the department's operational capability and financial expertise as reasons for the change.

Borrowers were advised that no immediate action is required, and those in repayment should continue working with their current loan servicer. Individuals in default were directed to a specific government website for assistance. An analysis from The College Investor noted the shift represents Treasury moving from a back-end role to directly managing the collection process and overseeing private agencies.

Some critics have expressed concern that the transition may cause confusion and potentially increase financial difficulties for those already in default.
