US Solar Generation Grew 25% in 2025, Could not Meet Rising Demand

According to data from pv magazine USA, solar electricity generation in the United States rose by nearly 25% in 2025, reaching 385 terawatt-hours. This growth meant solar provided just over 8.5% of the nation's total electricity for the year. For the first time in April 2025, solar's share exceeded 10% for an entire month.

The increase in solar output, which added 85 terawatt-hours, was the largest annual volume growth since 2017. Utility-scale solar installations expanded three times faster than small-scale systems. Despite this record, the new solar generation was insufficient to cover the overall increase in electricity demand, which grew by 130 terawatt-hours last year. Consequently, generation from fossil fuels also rose, by 26 terawatt-hours, leading to higher overall emissions.

Wind generation increased by 12 terawatt-hours in 2025 but saw its share of total generation decline slightly. Together, solar and wind provided 18.8% of all U.S. electricity last year. When including all renewable sources, hydroelectric, and nuclear power, low- and no-emission sources met 80% of the new electricity demand and constituted slightly over 43% of total generation. Fossil fuels supplied 57% of generation, with natural gas accounting for just under 40% and coal just over 16%. Coal use increased by 13% compared to the previous year.

The Energy Information Administration projects a record deployment of utility-scale generating capacity for 2026, led by solar providing just over half of an estimated 86 gigawatts. Combined with wind and storage, these three sources are expected to account for 93% of new capacity added. The agency also projects a net decrease in fossil fuel generation capacity for the year. In 2025, scheduled retirements of fossil fuel plants were lower than planned, with some delays attributed to political directives to keep coal plants operational and technical grid requirements in California.
