U.S. Malt Extract Imports
In June 2023, after three months of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches, when their volume decreased by -1.8% to 22K tons. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 11% m-o-m.
In value terms, imports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches reduced slightly to $65M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 17% m-o-m.
Imports by Country
In June 2023, Canada (12K tons) constituted the largest malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starch supplier to the United States, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (1.6K tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (1.2K tons), with a 5.7% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (+0.6% per month) and Singapore (+8.1% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($35M) constituted the largest supplier of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starch to the United States, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($6.2M), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 4.9% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Singapore (+16.6% per month) and Vietnam (-1.9% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In June 2023, the malt extract price amounted to $3,014 per ton (CIF, US), with an increase of 1.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 5.2% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,107 per ton. From April 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($5,007 per ton), while the price for China ($1,935 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
