U.S. Fuel Filter Import Grows 6% to 39M Units in November 2022
U.S. Fuel Filter Imports
After two months of decline, purchases abroad of oil or petrol-filters for internal combustion engines increased by 5.6% to 39M units in November 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 17% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 55M units. From June 2022 to November 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fuel filter imports reached $102M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 21% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $124M. From June 2022 to November 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (10M units), Germany (5.9M units) and Mexico (5.9M units) were the main suppliers of fuel filter imports to the United States, together comprising 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the biggest increases were in Brazil (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fuel filter suppliers to the United States were Mexico ($28M), China ($15M) and Germany ($8.6M), together accounting for 50% of total imports. South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Among the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In November 2022, the fuel filter price stood at $2.6 per unit (CIF, US), falling by -5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 19% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2.7 per unit in October 2022, and then declined in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($4.7 per unit), while the price for Indonesia ($1.0 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The major factors driving the growth of the fuel filter market are stringent government regulations regarding fuel economy, increasing vehicle production, and rising demand for aftermarket filters.
The light duty vehicle segment is projected to be the largest contributor to the fuel filter market in the United States during the forecast period. This is due to the increasing number of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles being sold in the country. The heavy duty vehicle segment is also expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period, owing to the growing construction and mining activities in the country.
The online channel is expected to be the fastest growing sales channel for fuel filters in the United States during the forecast period. This is due to increasing preference for online shopping among consumers and easy availability of a wide range of products on e-commerce platforms.
